About the Opportunity

A leading global specialty insurance organization is seeking an experienced Commercial Underwriter to join its growing underwriting team.

This role offers the opportunity to work within a highly specialized underwriting environment, managing a diverse portfolio of commercial risks while contributing to profitable growth, strong broker relationships, and long-term portfolio performance. The successful candidate will be responsible for underwriting new and renewal business, supporting distribution partner relationships, and contributing to the organization’s continued success through technical expertise and sound underwriting judgment.

Key Responsibilities

Underwriting & Portfolio Management

  • Underwrite and manage a portfolio of commercial insurance business in accordance with underwriting authority and company guidelines.
  • Evaluate new and renewal submissions, including risk selection, pricing adequacy, coverage analysis, and negotiation of terms and conditions.
  • Maintain a profitable and sustainable portfolio through disciplined underwriting practices.
  • Review and process changes to existing accounts while ensuring alignment with underwriting philosophy and policy requirements.
  • Analyze risk exposures and develop coverage solutions that balance client needs with profitability objectives.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and contribute to the achievement of underwriting and profitability goals.

Business Development & Broker Relations

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with broker partners and distribution channels.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities that align with underwriting strategy and portfolio objectives.
  • Support the development and execution of marketing initiatives designed to grow profitable business.
  • Attend broker meetings, networking events, and industry functions to strengthen market presence and relationships.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across multiple product lines to identify cross-selling and account expansion opportunities.

Leadership & Technical Expertise

  • Maintain current knowledge of market conditions, industry trends, emerging risks, and competitive developments.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to colleagues when appropriate.
  • Assist in mentoring and developing junior underwriting professionals.
  • Contribute to underwriting best practices, knowledge sharing, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Several years of commercial underwriting experience, preferably within specialty or complex commercial insurance environments.
  • Strong understanding of underwriting principles, pricing methodologies, and risk assessment techniques.
  • Experience managing broker relationships and developing new business opportunities.
  • Excellent analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building abilities.
  • Proven ability to manage a portfolio while balancing profitability and growth objectives.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a collaborative team environment.
  • Professional insurance designations or progress toward industry certifications are considered assets.

Salary Information

Compensation for the successful candidate will be determined by our client and may vary based on several factors, including local market conditions, geographic location, and job-related qualifications such as knowledge, skills, experience, education, and credentials.

Expected salary range: $80,000.00 – $100,000.00 annually.
