The Opportunity

Our client, a well-established insurance organization, is seeking an experienced and strategic insurance leader to oversee its Personal and Commercial Insurance operations.

This executive leadership role is responsible for driving underwriting excellence, operational performance, portfolio profitability, and team development across multiple lines of business. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping business strategy, enhancing underwriting discipline, supporting risk management initiatives, and fostering a high-performance culture.

The ideal candidate is a collaborative and results-oriented leader with extensive experience in underwriting, insurance operations, and people leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & Business Management

  • Lead the execution of departmental objectives and long-term business strategies.
  • Develop and implement operational plans that support profitability, growth, and service excellence.
  • Monitor portfolio performance and recommend strategies to improve underwriting and business results.
  • Contribute to broader organizational planning and strategic initiatives.

Underwriting Governance & Risk Management

  • Provide oversight and direction regarding underwriting standards, risk selection, pricing adequacy, and portfolio management.
  • Conduct regular underwriting reviews to ensure consistency with established guidelines and risk appetite.
  • Evaluate underwriting practices and implement enhancements where necessary.
  • Support the ongoing development of underwriting tools, authority structures, and operational frameworks.
  • Assist with risk transfer and reinsurance strategies as required.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop underwriting and operational teams.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and succession planning initiatives.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure service standards and underwriting expectations are consistently achieved.

Operational Oversight

  • Monitor operational performance through reporting, analytics, and quality assurance activities.
  • Conduct audits and reviews to ensure compliance with internal standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Work collaboratively with claims, underwriting, and operational teams to improve client outcomes and service delivery.
  • Develop and maintain key performance metrics to support business decision-making.

Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, business partners, insurers, reinsurers, and key stakeholders.
  • Support business development initiatives and identify opportunities for growth.
  • Participate in leadership meetings, governance committees, and strategic planning discussions.
  • Prepare executive reports and presentations for senior leadership and governance groups.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree considered an asset.
  • Professional insurance designation such as CPCU, ACII, FCIP, CIP, or equivalent required.
  • Minimum seven years of insurance or reinsurance industry experience.
  • Minimum five years of leadership experience managing teams and business operations.
  • Strong knowledge of commercial and personal property & casualty insurance operations.
  • Deep understanding of underwriting practices, authority structures, pricing principles, and risk management methodologies.
  • Experience with portfolio oversight, governance, and operational performance management.

Salary Information

Compensation for the successful candidate will be determined by our client and may vary based on several factors, including local market conditions, geographic location, and job-related qualifications such as knowledge, skills, experience, education, and credentials.

Expected salary range: $225,000.00 – $275,000.00 USD annually
